Top 5 Headshot Tips

If a production company is casting a project, they’ll usually have a very clear vision of how they want the overall piece to look, including the Talent. If you’re a performer, your headshot is the first thing a casting agent will look at. If you fit the bill, then they’ll look further into your CV, credits, skills, showreels, etc. Your headshot is what will get their attention right off the bat. At Casting Ireland, we receive headshots every day from performers. As a result, we know what grabs Client attention.

1. Show Your True Colours.

Black and white photographs are more or less obsolete in the industry. Always ensure your headshot is in colour. It helps the production company get a better idea of your tones, from your hair to your eyes to your skin. If you have a portfolio, feel free to feature black and white images, but it’s best not to make it your primary headshot. The same goes for acting CVs and online profiles. Make it as easy as possible for casting to see the real you!

2. It’s All in the Eyes.

As they say, the eyes are the windows to the soul. They’re also your ticket to getting cast! As human beings, eyes are our main focal point and key to connection. If possible, avoid wearing sunglasses, big hats, or looking away from the camera in your photographs. Ensure your full face is visible. If you have a visual impairment, casting agents would still love to see your eyes, so long as you’re comfortable. If you wear dark glasses, send some shots of you wearing those, too!

3. Be Yourself.

Keep your headshots current. Never be ashamed of looking different or older than you used to! Embrace the way you look now. Casting agents want to meet the real you. You’re more than enough, so try not to feel self-conscious.

4. Why So Serious?

Sometimes, people treat headshots like passport photos. If you focus too much on having a neutral expression, you can sometimes lose your “sparkle” or appear too stern. Don’t be afraid to have some fun at your photoshoot! Show off your personality by smiling as you normally would. Once again, it’s meant to be a positive reflection of the real you.

5. Ask for Advice

If you’re having trouble choosing your best headshot, don’t be afraid to ask for advice from the people that know you best! They’ll help you select which photos are the best reflection of how you appear on a day-to-day basis. When posing for the photographs, try not to lean into the types of characters you’d like to play. If you have a portfolio, feel free to include additional photos with character interpretations.
