Now that you’ve invested time into your Portfoliopad profile by uploading new headshots, cutting updated showreels, and improving your acting CV, it’s time to take it to the next level by strengthening your personal brand as an Actor.
We work with thousands of performers every year, from Background and Featured Extras to Models to Actors. With so many talented folks in the industry, we understand it can be difficult to stand out at times. Even if you’re a truly remarkable talent! Meanwhile, “standing out” is often the name of the game.
Making that impactful first impression can lead to shortlists, self-tape requests, and audition slots.
So… How do you do it?
As seasoned actors know all too well, it can take some time for the perfect gig to come along. Patience, persistence, and proactivity are key. So, use this time wisely by carving out a space for yourself in online acting communities.
There’s a dedicated section on each and every Portfoliopad profile that is often overlooked, underestimated, and underutilised. The area to which I’m referring is the “Socials” section found on the “General” page:

Many Talent refrain from populating this section, perhaps because they don’t see the value of attaching their personal profiles. That’s understandable if the content isn’t relevant, but if your Instagram or TikTok heavily focus on your acting career anyway, why not include it? Or better yet, create a separate profile that champions your career only.
Agencies often hone the power of social media in their marketing campaigns and are very active across those platforms. So, what better way for Actors to market themselves to get noticed? With every passing year, we receive more and more casting requests for campaigns, short films, and even soap operas that are broadcast exclusively on social media and/or online video sharing platforms.
Having your own carefully refined social media portfolio can help clients visualise how you might fit into their final product. With the right planning and execution, an engaging social media presence showcases your acting skills to a wider audience and could very well land you your dream role!
Having a strong backlog of social content communicates to Casting Directors / Producers that you are comfortable on camera. A smattering of casual content can also help them get a sense of your voice, personality, and mannerisms – something that’s nearly impossible to capture through still images alone.
To get started, ask yourself what kind of work you’d like to secure. If you are a comedic actor, why not perform short sketches? If you are more interested in dramatic acting, focus on monologues. If you have an interest in multiple genres, don’t be afraid to upload a variety of performances.
Choose a flattering colour palate and font, then be consistent in utilising them, gradually associating the visual cues with your personal brand. Ensure you have headshots and full body shots available, too. And keep the materials up to date! If you dye your hair or change your appearance dramatically, be sure and reflect it on your profile.
- Top tip: This is also where the idea of having separate personal and professional profiles comes into play. Having clear boundaries between the two will help you lock into a “work mindset” when using the latter to prevent burnout and blurred lines.
Once a project is fully wrapped and you have express permission to do so – Always check the terms of your NDA. Better to be safe than sorry! -, sharing and reposting past campaigns and performances to your page is a great way to demonstrate to Casting Directors/Producers that you not only have the skills, but the experience, too.
- Top tip: Never post confidential or sensitive material unless you have written permission to do so. Many clients forbid behind-the-scenes photos or videos being taken without prior approval. This can result in severe backlash and even litigation, depending on the nature of the work. Always ask for permission before taking or posting any images. Protecting your professionalism protects your future opportunities.
All that being said, if you’d prefer not to use social media, that’s completely fine! Don’t feel pressured. In that case, we’d strongly recommend sending us a short introductory video to add to your Portfoliopad profile. Ideally, keep it to a minute or less. Its primary function – particularly in the absence of a professional showreel – is to share a bit about your hobbies, interests, and industry experience for clients to review. You never know what it might lead to.
